Galvatron's Bogus Adventure Empty Galvatron's Bogus Adventure

Post by Galvatron Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:13 pm

I tell you what! I've been more busy than a swarm of flies feasting on a pile of dog shit.

Lately my job gives me Thursdays and Sundays off. The hours throughout my days vary from time to time. I hardly ever know when I'll be working or for how long. That said... I have ended up with some MUST DO projects around my house. Though I can only do these projects when I have time off work.
To start it out, two weeks ago, SUNDAY: the weather was nice so I decided to clean off the cob webs from my back porch. Using a water hose, I sprayed down my back porch and got it nice and clean.

Job #1 done.

The next day, MONDAY: I'm leaving for work and I see a small puddle of water on the floor next to my back door.
I figure, perhaps the door was not shut all the way when I was cleaning the porch. Since I had to leave, I asked the wife if she could clean the water. I told her to check in side the water heater closet and make sure no water is coming from there. Just as I arrive to my work shop she calls me. Tells me the water heater is pissing water everywhere!! Apparently this has been a hidden leak for a while. My first thought is to shut the water off. I can fix it when I get home.
But..... the water shut off valve is under the house. The access to the valve is behind the stairs of my back porch. The only way to get to it is to crawl from the other side of the house. So she just puts a pan under the leak and babysits it until I get home.

I did not get home until midnight that night and I was very tired. I slowed the leak down to a dribble and went to bed. The next day, TUESDAY: I was in a hurry and in no mood to crawl under the house to shut the water off.
So I destroyed my back deck to make it easy for me to shut the water off. Water dripped to the electrical components of the water heater and caused a huge spot of water damage on my floor.
So now I've got a no good water heater, water damaged floor, and a destroyed back porch.

So I had to buy a new water heater. I call up my old employer that I worked for for 15 years. Building houses.
They tell me they are having a liquidation sale everything must go. Since they shut down.
I was able to get the water heater for a good price and all the equipment I needed for free.
This time I got a pan to sit under the water heater. If it were ever to leak, the pan has a hole with a pvc pipe that goes under the house for the water to drain. No more future water damage.
I SUGGEST THIS TO ANY HOME OWNER!! Check your water heater. If it is sitting on the floor, you could end up with the same senario as me! Get a pan to install under it!! It's cheap and easy.

Got the new water heater installed easily. A person I know collects and recycles metal so I gave him my old water heater for a case of beer.

Job #2 done

THURSDAY:
The deck board used for my flooring was sagging badly and was about to break.
I cut up the linoleum to take a look at the water damage. I got 2 1/2 ft by 4ft of soggy water damaged deck board. So off to my old employer again to get some deck board and some wood backers to screw the deck board to. Got it all free!!

SUNDAY:
Then I decided to take a break from the floor and see what I can do to my back deck.
Placing the stairs in the same place would be rediculous. I had to move them away from the access panel to under my house. I used all the same wood material from my destruction. Whoever built the deck had no idea how to build a deck. Nothing was square. Not to mention they built it in front of the shut off valve.

The pre-destruction layout was....
stair stair stair deck stair stair stair

My newly built deck ended up a lot better. More sturdy, things are square, and easy access to my water valve.

Job #4 done

THURSDAY:
Then I had to move my brick walkway to meet up with the new stair location

Job #5 done

SATURDAY:
Now back to the floor.
Now when deck board gets wet, it swells as it absorbes the water. And when it dries, it stays swollen GIGGITY.
So I had to cut out the damaged deck board and replace it with the new piece.
Things were a little uneven so I had to sand with a belt sander.
Then filled the seams with wood putty to keep the small insects like ants etc.. out.
The floor is level, dry and sealed and ready for linoleum.

Job #6 done

SUNDAY:
I had some extra linoleum from when I did my bathroom. Unfortunatly, it was just a bit too narrow.
So I patched it together like a puzzle. If you ever done linoleum, you will agree that the glue is a freakin nightmare. I hate doing linoleum LOL

Job #7 done

Now I need to clean up my glue mess and paint my back deck.

Between all of these projects and working, I have not had a day of rest in over 2 weeks.

I have weeks like that from time-to-time so I sympathize with you completely. You should've used that case of beer as bargaining posture to invite friends over to help with the floor and deck. Galvatron's Bogus Adventure 42017 That's the only error I've seen you make so far.

Just finished cleaning the linoleum glue mess

Job #8 done.

But it don't end there. Just noticed the guest bathroom toilet is leaking. Looks like it needs a new wax gasket. Then the wife noticed a leak under the kitchen sink. IT NEVER ENDS!!

*forgot about this thread*

My bogus journey continues as my son and I were carrying a 200 pound TV through the house.

Yes... it dropped. Put a big hole in the floor. Had to patch the hole and redo the entire kitchen floor tile. While I was at it, I decided to cover up my nasty linoleum floor job in the utility room. Now the floor matches all the way and looks a hell of a lot better.
