Technology and Things of the Sort Empty Technology and Things of the Sort

Post by Dai Atlas Thu Dec 30, 2010 12:59 am

I have put this topic up on several sites I frequent to get other's
opinions. Some of you may have come across it several times at other
sites....or not. With the latest trend of CGI heavy movies, 3-D movies
and other great
technological feats from year to year I began to long for the old days.
It seems in my opinion this latest trend of everything 3-d or or every
movie being CGI heavy has made Hollywood lazy. A lot of movies over the
past few years that have relied on 95% CGI had some really piss poor
acting with the exception of Avatar (It was awesome). While I like cool
graphics and all that, I have found myself really diving into Anime, 80s
cartoons and old Black and White movies more and more lately. I just
need to escape from all the CGI heavy stuff.

I also want to state that I am tired of my cell phone...lol, technology
is good but sometimes it is a pain. I remember being a kid or even a
teen and before everyone could afford a cell phone/pager you had that
one maybe two phones in the house. Not cordless but the one that had the
buttons on the phone and not the reciever and the face plate came off
to show the insides. Anyway my point is back than you didn't have 50
million people calling you, people weren't easy to reach back then, and
if they weren't listed in the white pages, well you didn't find them.
Sometimes I miss that too because I swear my phone gets more calls than I
like...lol. My kids love laptops, cell phones, video games all of that
good stuff, but I also try to instill int them that picking up a good
book and reading is fun too. They have picked up on this in recent years
and I am proud but sometimes I worry if today's youth would panic or
freak out if Facebook and all the other social Networks went offline.
For that matter what if their cell phones stopped working, would they
even know how to write and mail a letter to a friend if they had to.
Suppose the internet shut down what would people do, would those of us
that grew up with the Dewey Decimal System still remember how to use it
in the library and look up information? If there were no PS3's, Xbox
360's, or Wii would people find their love for Pinball machines again or
a good old fashion board game like Monopoly?

Anyway as much as I love my laptop, upgrading to the latest phones, and
hanging out with you guys on the web i often long for the old days and
wonder if those of you in my age group miss those days as well and
sometimes get burnt out from all this technology. On top of that how do
you think people would react if the web, texting, and Facebook was cut
off?

well ... i dont rely on technology ( mostly cause it baffles me )

i for one quite enjoy sitting back and reading a book ( bet it shocks you lot that im actually quite partial to reading a novel ) or playing the old board games like monopoly, twister, operation, mousetrap etc

i must say ... for movies ... im not a fan of the newer stuff at all ... theres far too much CGI and not nearly enough stuntmen / women
i like to sit back and watch some of the old british comedy movies and tv ( the " carry on " movies, allo allo, fawlty towers, blackadder, mr bean etc )

the newest coputer games console here is the N64 ... thats when games were actually hard and difficult to beat, nowadys kids can finish games in a matter of hours whereas when i was a kid with the NES, SNES, mega drive, master system, gameboy and N64 ... well quite honestly ... some of those games i still havent beaten and probably never will

all that said ... i do have to be thankful of the 3 Ws ... it has made me some good friends and its given me the one thing i always longed for ... someone to be happy with :)

A lot of this new tech baffles me also.
It seems that I am always repairing my computer.
Back in the day, it was backyard car mechanics. Not it's backroom computer repair geeks.
I knew I should have been a nerd when I was a kid. DAMMIT!!

I don't think kids today would know how to function without computers.
I don't let mine spend countless hours on it. I let them check their Facebook and chat with friends (that I also know).
But nothing else. The internet is a very dangerous place for kids. So if the WWW crashes, my kids will remain normal.

I don't have a cell phone. I used to, but didn't like it ringing all the time. Especially when I was away from home.
Camping, or just out travelling the roads with the family. So I got rid of the damn thing. I don't miss it at all.
My oldest mini-con (15) has one. He is constantly texting on that damn thing. Or he has it up to his ear talking.
He always has his head looking down at his text messages. I'm afraid he don't know how to look up.
I always see people walking around talking or texting. I hardly ever see anybody walking together and talking anymore.

My kids think it's funny when I tell them that I had to go to an Arcade to play games. I had to scrounge up quarters. Then go spend a few hours playing Pac Man.

My how times have changed.

I definately NOT miss old days hehe I would die without my pc. Besides I am born in te 80's so don't remember much of it, the thing I remember best is the fall of the Berlin wall in '89 lmao

As for movies..well don't watch a lot of movies, and when I do I don't think so much of if it's CGI made or not.

I hate that! I always see teens doing that, I just wanna push them over. They wouldn't know what hit 'em. I kinda just wanna see if they'd even stop texting, or just lay there on the ground staring at the phone.

As for movies, there's a bit too much CGI. I liked the older style, as long as it was done well. Star Wars still looks good. I never did like the stop animation or claymation-it always looked crappy to me. Army of Darkness gets a pass, of course, and maybe Jason and the Argonauts. Man, I haven't seen that forever!
